7 Nosy Questions with John Mixon, owner of Blast Trash Can Cleaners

What’s the single grossest thing at your home? Chances are it’s your garbage bin, the nasty outdoor one with the cruddy food spills, dripped paint and who knows what else in there. If you’re like me, my daily deposit of kitchen refuse into the outdoor bin is usually accomplished by lifting the lid with just one finger, flinging in the kitchen trash bag and walking away as quickly as possible. Doing it after dark when the roaches are at play inside the can is much, much worse.

Given my dread of the big black-brown bin, I was delighted to find a service that cleans those stinky things, as well as the green recycling bins. It’s called Blast Trash Can Cleaners, and we recently hired the company to clean and disinfect two of the worst City of Houston garbage bins ever.

It’s easy to arrange – you can do it all online. The blue Blast truck will come to your home after your weekly trash pick-up to give your bins a good cleaning and leave them curbside or in another spot that you specify. You can sign up for one-time only or a regular recurring service.

We recently caught up with John Mixon, founder and owner of Blast Trash Can Cleaners, to ask how he got into this business.

Please tell us briefly how you started Blast Trash Can Cleaners.

I’ve worked with large private waste and recycling companies for over 12 years. I saw this type of service offered in other cities and wanted to bring it to Houston.

What are the satisfactions? Frustrations?

Making people happy and receiving positive feedback from our customers is the ultimate satisfaction for me! This is a new service, and some of the biggest frustrations include informing and educating the community about this service and the benefits it offers to homeowners.

How long does it take to clean two cans?

Every can is different, but usually a first-time cleaning takes about 10 minutes. This includes washing with hot water, disinfecting, deodorizing and drying out the can. For customers on a subscription service, after the first cleaning, it usually takes five to six minutes to complete the process.

Does the truck leave gunk in the gutter?

No. One of the great benefits of our service is that the dirty water is collected in our truck and not poured back on the streets or on your property. All the dirty water is disposed of at a sewer so it does not go into our storm-water drains.

What do you do in your free time, if you have any?

I do not have much free time, but I do like to help other small business owners and consult with young entrepreneurs when I can.

Where do you see yourself and your company in 10 years?

I plan on being with Blast Trash Can Cleaners for a long time, and I am excited to see its growth. This is a new business, and I do everything right now. In 10 years I see myself in more of a small business-owner role and having more employees to handle the tasks that I am not so great at.
